Boulder Dam Credit Union
A Community Financial Institution

by Eric Estes
CEO, Boulder Dam Credit Union

Boulder Dam Credit Union represents a greater portion of Boulder City residents and businesses compared to any other like entity. Our best estimates indicate approximately 75 to 80 percent of Boulder City residents and businesses are members of the Credit Union.

Why? Exceptional service, knowledgeable staff and a very low cost of doing business are the main components and reasons. But the reality lies within the mutual trust enjoyed between the community and the Credit Union. It is a level of trust that is almost non-existent between the public and the larger financial institutions in our country. With this trust comes a major responsibility to serve the community.

The Credit Union embraces its mission of social responsibility in order to improve the lives of everyone within our community regardless of whether they have a direct tie to the Credit Union. Through education, product innovation and local sponsorships, Boulder Dam Credit Union pursues multiple avenues to protect and improve the quality of life for the community of Boulder City and its residents.

From an educational perspective, our high school financial education class has been in place for over ten years and we now reach approximately 90 percent of the seniors from Boulder City High School by the time they graduate. Likewise, in partnering with Andrew J. Mitchell Elementary School and their Leader In Me program, the Credit Union is teaching the invaluable habit of savings to the youngest in our community and we are excited to announce this program will be expanding to Martha P. King Elementary School this coming fall. Additionally, in the last eighteen months, we have provided and supported classes on Social Security, retirement planning and protection against elder financial abuse.

From a sponsorship standpoint, a significant advantage the Boulder Dam Credit Union has over its competitors is our “marketing budget.” We don’t run commercials, we place very few advertisements, and we don’t buy billboard space. What do we do? Sponsorships. Sports teams, school projects, Rotary events, Damboree, Senior Center, Lend-a-Hand, Emergency Aid, Spring Jamboree, Heart of the Community Gala, Easter Egg Hunt, Art in the Park, Great American Awards, Nevada Citizenship, World Traveler, music programs, golf tournaments, and the list goes on and on. Do we always receive advertising equal to our sponsorship? Not always, but each of these events/organizations are benefiting from our support as they support the community. It is truly a win-win proposition.

Most of our projects, justifiably so, are focused on the Boulder City community. One however reaches far beyond and is a project near and dear to the hearts of our staff, the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN). Since 1983, CMN Hospitals have raised billions of dollars, most of it $1 at a time. These funds are used to provide equipment and services to participating hospitals’ pediatric units for children who otherwise could not afford proper health care.

Through Credit Unions for Kids, Boulder Dam Credit Union participates each year in CMN’s fundraising efforts. Since 1996, the staff at Boulder Dam Credit Union has been actively involved
raising tens of thousands of dollars with the help of our members and the Boulder City community. Funds raised are being put to work saving lives in our community; all funds we raise benefit St. Rose Siena Hospital in Henderson, our local CMN affiliate. These donations have gone to support research and training, purchasing equipment, and paying for uncompensated care. All these factors help to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible.

Once again this year the staff will be hosting Miracle Jeans Day every Wednesday through September 16th. On these days, the staff will be permitted to wear jeans and CMN shirts (for a small donation) in an effort to raise awareness and funds for CMN.

Additionally, from August 1st through September 16th members and businesses can purchase CMN “icons” for display in our lobby for $1.00, $20.00 or $100.

And finally, from September 2nd through the 18th, we will be hosting a silent auction in the lobby to benefit CMN. The auction will conclude on Friday, September 16th which coincides with the final day of the Miracle Jeans Day promotion. Every dollar we raise goes directly to benefit the pediatrics unit at St. Rose Siena.

For the employees of Boulder Dam Credit Union, the social mission of the Credit Union is a tremendous benefit to their employment. Community involvement and investment benefits all of us and our quality of life.

Boulder Dam Credit Union truly is a “community” financial institution.
