Hurricanes

While it's fresh, let's talk about hurricanes. This month it's how to avoid them, next month will be what to do if you're caught in one while traveling.

Hurricane Harvey, Irma, and possible more, wreaked havoc on the tourist industry, especially the cruise portion. But you love cruising, so read on.

The first solution to avoid them, of course, is to know that hurricane season is June through November for the Caribbean, September through November for South Baja and Mexico, and June through November for South Pacific and Southern Asia.

"But," you say, "I can get some great deals during those dates." That is true, especially peak season of mid-August through late October. So, if you want to go then anyway, here are some tips.

Choose a southern Caribbean trip to lower your odds of encountering a hurricane. Islands such as Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are on the outskirts of the hurricane belt and don't see as many storms. Another option is Alaska or the Mediterranean, they have their budget season in late summer, early fall.

Purchase travel insurance, this can help cover costs like missed flights or unexpected hotel stay. Be sure to read the fine print to make sure the plan includes weather disruptions. In this case, it might be best to purchase what the cruise company offers (not normally the optimal option).

If you do end up on a cruise with a storm headed your way, you're better off on a ship than at a resort hotel. Cruise ships can navigate around storms, or outrun them. Hurricanes move slowly, about eight to ten knots/hour (9 to 11 mph); ships can 'speed' along at up to 22 knots/hour (about 25 mph).

And here's something fun. Norwegian Cruise Line, had two ships come into Miami early to avoid Hurricane Irma. Those passengers who could not find transportation out of Miami or a safe place to stay could sail back out to sea to wait out the storm - free of charge with unlimited booze and food. The name of the ship: Escape.
