Mayor's Brief

One-Stop Career Shop

A few weeks ago, I participated in a ribbon-cutting and open house for Boulder City’s new One-Stop Career Center. Located in the Boulder City Library. This is just the second One-Stop Center in Southern Nevada. It’s a collaborative effort between the Library and Workforce Connections, whose mission is connecting employers to a ready workforce. Funding was made possible by the 2014 Workforce Innovation and the Opportunity Act, the first major legislative workforce reform in fifteen years.

The center provides job-seekers and workers with career services, education, training, and the support services they need to not only get employed but stay employed. The center also supports businesses, including helping them find skilled workers plus educating and training their current workforce.

Since its opening on April 17th, our center has already served hundreds of job-seekers and workers. It’s also worked with several local employers, including St. Jude’s Ranch, Boulder City Justice Court, and the Senior Center to name just a few. I know, for instance, that Boulder City’s Breaking the Cycle Drug Court program has found the One-Stop Center to be a great benefit in helping to get its participants back into society with productive job placement.

When it comes to unemployment, Boulder City isn’t all that different than the national average, so hundreds more could undoubtedly benefit from the center’s services. If you’re unemployed, underemployed, or just looking to improve your skills and marketability, check it out. If you’re an employer, allow the center to help you train your workers and find new ones. And let’s all help by spreading the word since often the problem isn’t a lack of desire but instead simply not knowing where to go for help.

My friend Jack Edwards has been asking for years what Boulder City is doing to create jobs. And now, thanks to Workforce Connections, the Library, and hard-working public servants like Peggy Leavitt, I’ve got a One-Stop answer for him.
