Oath Of Office
I, (insert name), do solemnly swear that I will support, protect and defend the Constitution and Government of the United States, and the Constitution and Government of the State of Nevada, against all enemies, whether domestic or foreign, and that I will bear true faith, allegiance and loyalty to the same, any ordinance, resolution or law of any State notwithstanding, and that I will perform well and faithfully all the duties of Police Officer on which I am about to enter; so help me God.

These eighty-five words sum up quite nicely what we have asked each police officer to do. Throughout our lives many of us have taken this oath or one very similar as we commit ourselves to our community, state and country. While we openly embrace this oath, oftentimes as friends and family proudly look on, it isn’t until later we fully appreciate the totality of the pledge we accepted.

None of us willingly accepted this oath expecting to take someone’s life – sure we all knew it was something that could happen – to someone else, not in Boulder City. None of us willingly accepted this oath expecting to take a friend to jail for a violation of the law, our friends would never put us in that position. None of us willingly accepted this oath wanting to work holidays, miss our children’s ballgame, or deal with the personal tragedy experienced on any given day as a police officer. So, why then did we take this oath? For those that have taken an oath in the past, we know it is very simply service to others – be it our community, our state, or our nation, we are committed servants even when it is not a popular thing to do.

Boulder City is truly blessed with some of the best public safety servants known to man. I witness daily officers and firefighters alike giving of themselves to make Boulder City a better place to live, work and visit.

What have you done today to make Boulder City a better place to live, work and visit? Policing, after all, is everyone’s business.

Until next month, stay safe.
