Reid Report
by Senator Harry Reid
Democratic Leader

A New Direction For Boulder City
I believe in building opportunity and prosperity for all.  That’s why I recently proposed a new legislative agenda – ‘A New Direction – Six for ‘06’ – that will make health care more affordable; ensure a dignified retirement for seniors; lower our gas prices and achieve energy independence; and help working families by cutting college costs and making health coverage more affordable.

The plan will also help provide real security for our country and ensure a dignified retirement for Boulder City seniors.
In the Senate, I’m working hard to ensure these issues, the same issues facing people in Boulder City and across America, are addressed.  Beginning with a goal of an America that strives for the common good, these are my legislative priorities:

Secure America at Home and Overseas: Reclaim American leadership with a tough, smart plan; rebuild a state-of-the-art military capable of projecting power wherever necessary; fully man, train, and equip our National Guard and our police, firefighters and other first responders.
Make Health Care More Affordable:  Fix the prescription drug program by putting people ahead of drug companies and HMOs, eliminate wasteful subsidies, negotiate lower drug prices, ensure the program works for seniors; invest in stem cell and other medical research.

Lower Gas Prices and Achieve Energy Independence: Crack down on price gouging; eliminate billions in subsidies for oil and gas companies; use the savings to provide consumer relief; develop American alternatives, including biofuels; promote energy efficient technology.
Help Working Families: Raise the minimum wage; repeal tax giveaways that encourage companies to move jobs overseas.

Cut College Costs: Make college tuition deductible from taxes; expand Pell grants and slash student loan costs.

Ensure Dignified Retirement: Prevent the privatization of Social Security; expand savings incentives; and ensure pension fairness.

Nevadans are counting on a new direction for America. I will continue working to lead Boulder City and the rest of the country in a new direction.
