Hurricanes (Part 2)

Last month we talked about avoiding travel to areas prone to hurricanes. This month we have some tips from an article by Shivani Vora in The New York Times, on what to do if you're at a destination in the path of a storm or are caught in one.

If already at a destination in the path of a storm, you will need to act quickly to leave town. Evacuate if you can and follow directions of the local authorities. If you're flying, call the airline to get a seat on the next available flight. If nothing is available, consider buying a one-way ticket home on another carrier. Do this in the days before a storm is predicted to hit, not the day of, otherwise all outbound flights may be canceled. Also, before you leave for the airport, ask your hotel if it's possible to return in case your flight is canceled. You want to avoid using the airport as a shelter.

If you can't leave, here are some tips: Stock up on a flashlight with extra batteries, blankets, and plenty of food and water. Properties in hurricane-prone areas often provide these items. If not, buy them at a local grocery or supply store. If staying at a hotel on the beach, find alternative accommodations inland. Keep your cell phone charged, and if traveling in hurricane-prone areas, you should bring at least one portable charger or power pack. It's critical to let your family, friends, and employer know where you are, and stay in constant communication with them throughout the storm. Finally, keep your bags packed to move at a moments notice. You may have to go to another property or room on your property if the storm blows out your windows.

Bottom line: Be Prepared!
