A New Approach to Youth Sports

Youth participation in league orientated sports has an enormous following in Boulder City. Over the past year, youth sports’ involvement included 321 soccer, 121 flag football, 110 basketball, 131 floor hockey and 173 baseballs players.

In the past, the sports staff has spent countless hours attempting to formulate evenly matched teams for all of our sports. Regardless of these efforts, there have been two or three teams that dominate the league and two or three teams that struggle. Parents and coaches have voiced their concern with this situation. To address this issue, the Parks and Recreation Department is implementing a different method to split-up the talent pool in the prospective leagues. The staff will allow the computer to assign children to teams; thus creating randomly-generated teams identifying only gender and grade as the means to even them out. The staff will then add coach’s children to their teams and/or siblings to the same team after the computer generates the results.

Additionally, this 2017/2018 sports season, the Boulder City Park and Recreation Department will begin offering fundamental skill clinics before each sport as opposed to rating or assessment clinics that we have used in the past. The skill clinics will not be used to rank the children. Instead, the clinics will introduce the sport to newcomers and refresh skills for those returning, these are not mandatory.

Registration is required for placement on a team. A waiting list will begin the day after registration ends, as teams will be made according to the number of registrants in each age division. The waiting list will not guarantee a position on a team; this will be the most challenging change for some families as pre-registering their child at the Recreation Department Office at 900 Arizona Street before the given deadline for each sport is mandatory to be guaranteed placement on a team.
