Reid Report
by Senator Harry Reid
Senate Majority Leader

Tough Times For Nevada
Nevada is facing some of the toughest times we’ve seen in decades. Jobs are being cut, home foreclosures are skyrocketing, and it is increasingly difficult for families to put food on the table.  There is no doubt that 2008 was a difficult year for Nevada and the nation. Fortunately, the new year opens with promise.

In January, we inaugurated Barack Obama as our first African-American president. President Obama and leaders in Congress are committed to delivering the change being demanded by Nevadans and all Americans.

There are several legislative priorities, designed with Nevada in mind, that I will strive to enact quickly to address the challenges facing Nevada and the nation: reinvesting in our economy, creating jobs, developing clean energy, making healthcare affordable, protecting homeowners, expanding educational opportunities, strengthening our military, securing our borders, and restoring fiscal responsibility.

I am working to strengthen our economy by cutting taxes for the middle class and creating jobs.  We can create good-paying jobs in Nevada by developing Nevada’s clean energy industry and by investing in vital transportation projects.

With our state’s vast solar, wind and geothermal resources, Nevada is positioned to lead a national clean energy revolution. If we do that, we can break our addiction to oil, protect Nevadans from volatile gas prices, and diversify our state’s economy.

To help keep struggling families in their homes, I secured more than $70 million in foreclosure assistance last year and I will keep working to stabilize the housing market.

To improve Nevada’s schools, I am also going to work to ensure that our teachers have the resources they need, increase access to early childhood education, support a rigorous curriculum and keep schools accountable.

Even as we face major challenges at home, we cannot forget our troops serving overseas, as well as those here at home. We will provide the funding for training, equipment and support to our soldiers and airmen at Nellis Air Force Base, Fallon Naval Air Station and Nevada National Guard – 600 of whom will deploy to Afghanistan soon.
