Library Corner by Duncan R. McCoy, Director
Boulder City Library
It's At The Library
Well gang, this month we’re going to learn about Boulder City Library’s Nevada Room. The Nevada Room was begun at the old library by then library director Carroll Gardner and her friend Virginia “Teddy” Fenton with lots of help from other folks, especially Dennis McBride, who was on the library staff at the time. A very nice plaque hangs in the Nevada Room, honoring Teddy’s contributions to the collection.

The Nevada Room houses books about Nevada and books by Nevada authors. Microfilm copies of the Boulder City News, back into the 1930’s and the Las Vegas Review-Journal, back to 1964 are also housed there. The Library houses various government documents in the Nevada Room, notably City Council, Planning and Zoning, Parks and Rec, and Airport Committee meeting packets, as well as environmental impact reports from state and federal government agencies for projects of interest to local folks.
Many of the Nevada Room books can be borrowed, the same as other books in the Library, although some of the books we retain for “reference” must be used in the Library, and are not loaned. When new Nevada books are published, the Library normally purchases multiple copies and retains one for “reference” and processes the others for circulating.
For patrons doing legal research, the Nevada Room has Nevada Revised Statutes, Nevada Administrative Code, County Code and City Code books.
In large file cabinets are over 1,500 photos of the early days in Boulder City, the construction of Hoover Dam, and other topics of historical interest. The photo collection was developed and splendidly organized by Dennis McBride, now curator at the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum. The photos can be scanned and saved to disk with a computer available in the Nevada Room, should students or researchers wish to use the photos for their papers and projects.
Pamphlet files in the Nevada Room contain clipped ephemeral material (pamphlets and news clippings) on a wide variety of topics about Nevada and the local area. Topographic maps of areas of interest within the state are also filed in the Nevada Room.
