Thank goodness for the Recreation Department. Back in the 60s and 70s, an afternoon recreation program was offered where children could go to play board games, cards and inside activities of all kinds. As the two parent working household increased over the years, this program transitioned into what today is our Summer Parks Program located at the 900 Arizona Street Recreation Center operating Monday through Friday 7 a.m. 6 p.m.
Summer Parks incorporates games, arts & crafts, pool and field trips and a wide range of recreational activities. This year, the children are establishing a plant nursery to help establish 31’ers Heirloom Hollyhocks for City planting areas. Ah, water cans and spray bottle misters sound like a great way to stay cool on a hot summer afternoon.
We anticipate that next year, you will see 31’ers Heirloom Hollyhock blooms at the front of the Recreation Center. Of course, the children will be able to take plant starts home with them too.
I can see this growing to become quite a tradition with help from the community. We ask that this year when your plants go to seed, that you set some aside for this program. Please consider that our program doesn’t start until school gets out in June. Plants that can handle a late planting date will do best. If you’re willing to start some plants on our behalf, please consider putting them in a plastic containers and sending them our way.
Please contact me at (702)293-9340 or psullivan@bcnv.org to make arrangements.
