Stargazing
Clark County Community College boasts the only public Planetarium in Southern Nevada. Presentations on Saturday afternoon are a terrific get-away with the family. September 8 begins Force 5, suitable for second graders on up.

Ride out a hurricane, peek inside the funnel cloud of a massive tornado and view an immense solar flare up close and personal. The Planetarium’s Digistar3 hemispheric projection system “creates virtual realities” for the audience on the surrounding domed screen. Living through our recent monsoons, and briefly experiencing Mother Nature’s fury will surely enhance your appreciation of Force 5! The approximate 25 minute presentation also shows how these forces in nature develop and gather energy. Awesome!

Skywatch, an original presentation by the Planetarium staff, is included with each show and features the latest in the realm of stargazing. Usually about 20 minutes, take good mental notes to participate in the question/answer session with knowledgeable staff members.

Besides the Saturday afternoon show, there are presentations on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 with an added bonus! In clear weather, telescopes at the student observatory are open for real time stargazing after the show. Be sure to arrive early; no late seating! Admission is only $5; some discounts apply for seniors and students. Shows vary so check out the website www.ccsn.edu/planetarium or try the Astronomy Hot Line, 651-4759. Show reservations available at 651-4505. The Planetarium is an easy ride from Boulder City to 3200 E. Cheyenne, North Las Vegas.

Having trouble selecting the perfect gift for the person with nearly everything? Through the Planetarium, dedicate whichever star you choose for a $35 donation. Your special person will receive a spiffy certificate with the constellation and information about the star. Details at the show reservation number above.

For dedicated star buffs, the Astronomical Society of Nevada has a Las Vegas chapter; visit www.astronomynv.org/vegas or call 775-324-4814.
