Lake Mead Cruises
Outrageously Great Tours
Lake Mead Cruises, one of Boulder City’s largest employers, put the “Desert Princess” into service in 1991. Originally cruising from Lake Mead Marina, with offices in Boulder City, a beautiful new Landing facility was completed and operations began there June 18, 1996. The Landing is a self-contained barge, 100’ x 110’ with warehousing and administration offices on site.
On April 22, 2003, Lake Mead Cruises relocated the entire operation about 3 miles south of Boulder Harbor to Hemenway Harbor due to drought induced lower water levels. The relocation was a massive undertaking of detail deftly handled by Larry Hogan, Vice-President and General Manager.
“Moving is never easy,” says Rod Fair, President, “but Larry skillfully handled relocating utilities, the Landing, and operated for several months with cell phone service and a land based generator before utilities were hooked up.”
Although the water level has dropped, Roxanne Dey, Public Information Officer with the National Park Service emphasizes there is enough water to enjoy recreation on Lake Mead!
Throughout the time Lake Mead Cruises has provided passenger vessel service for locals and visitors on Lake Mead, the company has actively participated in promoting tourism with both the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, and the Nevada Commission on Tourism NCOT. Annually, NCOT presents the Governor’s Tourism Development Award, and most recently, Lake Mead Cruises was presented with one last December for relocation efforts and refurbishing of the “Desert Princess Too.”
The “Desert Princess” cruises daily to Hoover Dam for narrated sightseeing, and offers both Breakfast and Dinner Cruises. Both the “Desert Princess” and the “Desert Princess Too” are available year-round, space available, for private charter. Cruising is a wonderful way to enjoy the beauty of our High Desert Lake, and provides excellent photo opportunities!
