The Gift of Giving

The Boulder City Community Club Celebrates 40 Years of Giving Back to Boulder City

by Shauna Sharp

With the holidays approaching, the spirit of giving is in the air. Exchanging gifts is a cherished holiday tradition and the season is finally upon us! The psychological effect of giving is one of the major contributing factors for creating the "holiday spirit."

According to an article titled 5 Ways Giving is Good for You, giving makes us feel happy, is good for your health, promotes cooperation and social connection, evokes gratitude, and most importantly, giving is contagious. "When we give, we don't only help the immediate recipient of our gift, we also spur a ripple effect of generosity through the community."

As you begin your search for the perfect gift for your loved ones this season, be sure to stop by the annual Doodle Bug Bazaar held at the Recreation Department at 900 Arizona Street the first Saturday in December from 10am to 5pm. Each year, the Boulder City Community Club sponsors this beloved event and this year they celebrate forty years of the "gift of giving" to the community of Boulder City.

The Doodle Bug Bazaar is a mecca for crafters seeking to provide handmade items for the Christmas shoppers who want a personal touch in their gift giving efforts. In a world with high tech gadgets galore, a handmade item purchased from a dedicated crafter is heartwarming.

As you peruse the toys and trinkets on display, remember that holiday giving isn't only about consumer spending. About 63 percent of Americans plan to give to a charity this holiday season, according to Bruskin Goldring Research. By purchasing from the Doodle Bug Bazzar and contributing to the event's success, you are doing one in the same.

The funds raised by the Community Club through vendor space and food sales at the Doodle Bug Bazaar are dispersed to other service organizations throughout the community and has an impact far more reaching than you may realize. The Community Club has made contributions to numerous local organizations including but not limited to: Emergency Aide for their Thanksgiving Gift Baskets, Angel Tree program and a regular donations to help those in need in our community, Boulder City Damboree to support the colorful 4th of July fireworks display, Boulder City Senior Center for meals they provide to our elderly residents, Boulder City Recreation Department to enhance youth programs and to purchase chairs and tables used throughout the city, Boulder City Police Department for their Explorer program, Lend A Hand to support their ongoing aide to residents in need ...and the list goes on.

You'll notice a common thread throughout the list of contributions made by the Community Club; and that is that they are focused right here in our community. By keeping their efforts and contributions local, they are continually making a huge impact on the sense of community that makes Boulder City such a wonderful place to live.

"A strong community benefits the individual and the community as well as the greater society. People of all ages who feel a sense of belonging tend to lead happier and healthier lives, and strong communities create a more stable and supportive society." – The Importance of Community: APS Healthcare – Healthy Together.

This holiday season, we would like to encourage everyone to join the Boulder City Community Club in investing in the well-being of our small town community. If you need a few pointers on how you might be able to do that, try these on for size:

  • Participate in random acts of kindness
  • Volunteer
  • Meet your neighbors
  • Support our schools
  • Organize/attend a neighborhood/community party
  • Join a club or social organization
  • Attend community events
  • Buy from local merchants

With the gift of giving and a sense of community in mind, we urge you to attend a community event and buy from a local merchant by getting down to the Doodle Bug Bazaar where holiday spirit fills the air and the gift of giving extends beyond your immediate reach – for that special gift – and out into the community we all love so dearly.

You are invited to join the Community Club in supporting the community. To find out more about the Community Club, contact either President, Linda Graham at 702-278-6603 or Vice President, Beverly Parry at 702-293-7623. Have a great holiday season through the gift of giving.
