Our Roadways

The City has been very fortunate in obtaining funding from the RTC for street reconstruction and has several projects that are now in the design process. Perhaps one of the most exciting projects is the Nevada Way reconstruction project, which is in the design phase.

The section of Nevada Way roadway from Wyoming to Buchanan is at the end of its useful life. Its need for reconstruction and the need for sewer reconstruction was the driving force behind this project; however, it has given the City a great opportunity to make Nevada Way more bicycle and pedestrian friendly.

Concepts for Nevada Way improvements include adding bicycle lanes on each side, increasing the width of sidewalks, center landscape medians, a bus turn-out, lighting, enhanced landscaping and entrance features.

Public Works Director Scott Hansen has been taking the lead on this project and deserves credit for bringing this project together. He has worked with local business owners and the Chamber of Commerce to fine tune the design concepts and will continue to meet with each business owner adjacent to the proposed improvements. He and his staff also put together a grant application for bus shelters which resulted in the City receiving a $250,000 grant award for bus shelter construction. This segment of Nevada Way will also include two new bus turn outs and shelters.

The tentative timeline for the project is to begin construction in January of 2012 and complete phase 1 of the construction by May of 2012. There is still considerable work that needs to be done before the construction phase can begin, but this is a project that is worth your attention.

Concept plans are on display in the main hallway in City Hall, so stop by and check out the drawings if you have a chance. The next step in the process is to meet with adjacent business owners one on one to show them how the street right of way adjacent to their property would change with the project.
