National Night Out

Last month’s National Night Out was, by far, the best one ever! The crowd was estimated at over 700, and from what I witnessed everyone had a terrific time. I’d like to recognize those individuals and organizations that made the event truly spectacular and enabled Boulder City’s Finest (PD) and Boulder City’s Bravest (FD) to interact with the residents they serve.

Officer Jen Ford, who is primarily responsible for the event’s success, spent months personally handling the hundreds of details required to ensure that everyone who came had a great time. The food, drinks, displays, entertainment, giveaways, t-shirts, helicopter landing, parachute jump, banners and advertisements required months to plan and schedule.
Jen made public appearances before civic groups to speak about this year’s activities, she had signs and banners produced and displayed throughout the city, she made sure the event was frequently advertised on the city’s website, in the local newspaper and city mailers, and this year she enlisted the National Park Service and Hoover Dam Police Department to participate. Jen did much of the work on her own time, and her attention to detail and ability to multitask were evidenced by an event that went off without a hitch.
This year the annual softball game between the police department and the fire department included a few new players. No, I’m not talking about the semi-pro “ringers” the firefighters always seem to recruit! National Park Service Chief Park Ranger Mary Hinson and several other NPS Rangers and Hoover Dam Police Officers were split up between both teams.
The partnership witnessed on the softball field is something of which all of Boulder City should be proud. Although we wear different uniforms we are all united in public safety service as police officers, rangers and firefighters.
National Night Out is always held nationally on the first Tuesday of every August. Next year’s event will be held on August 2nd from 6-9 p.m. I hope to see you there!
