This special connection between a man and his pet can be unparalleled. Whenever I think of dogs, I think of my mother. My mother has always been quite the animal person. In fact, at one point, we had four dogs in our household. But, what makes that bond between man and man’s best friend so amazing? Mom put it quite simply: “Dogs are just genuine. They are loyal (until someone else has food!). Their love and affection is real, as they are quick to forgive. Most of all, they live in the moment.”

Many health benefits also come with owning a pet. For example, one gets exercise by walking the dog, or wrestling with the cat, and can lower blood pressure. Research also shows owning a pet can increase your immune system, to help gain immunity to certain allergens. Most of all, the psychological effects are numerous, for instance, lowered anxiety.

I personally know how amazing it is to own a pet. Six years ago, when I was eight years old, we were given a Boston terrier. He was just a pup, and full of a boundless energy.

Not much has changed, except I have grown very close to Spencer (my dog). I’m his main master, and he is extremely protective, and very fun. It is amazing to me how close of a bond we have, especially now. I tell you, that dog loves to wrestle with his rope!

I will soon be moving, and need to “re-home” Spencer. It is going to be difficult, especially since I’ve really grown up with him.

Man’s best friend, all right. A pet is certainly a great friend. After a difficult day, pet owners quite literally “feel the love”. Let’s face it: an animal’s love and companionship is like no other, and is a beautiful enigma.
