Giving Back
Your next volunteer experience could be with the Wizard of Oz – well, not exactly, but at least on an OZ CREW voyage, skimming across Lake Mead to a beautiful cove trashed with litter! Operation Zero powered by Citizens Removing and Eliminating Waste is under way from now through mid-October and needs your help.

Accept the Lake Mead National Recreation Area challenge to gather up a CREW of 5 to 10 family, friends and co-workers for an opportunity to explore an outer cove of Lake Mead only accessible by boat while giving back. Youngsters need to be 12 and older and as all volunteers, in good health. For details, call the Volunteer office, 293-8717, e-mail: lame_volunteer_coordinator@nps.gov or check out the website: nps.gov/lame/ supportyourpark.

Visit the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce across from the Boulder Dam Hotel on your next stroll through downtown, and ask about volunteering. Also, their brochure wall is filled with fun stuff to do right here in our Southern Nevada neighborhood. Web site www.bouldercity chamber.com, phone (702) 293-2034.

Neat Nevada Notes: Of the ten designated scenic byways in our beautiful Silver State, four are close! Mt. Charleston Scenic Byway boasts three State Highways, Lee Canyon Rd, SR 156, Deer Creek Rd, SR 158 and part of Kyle Canyon Rd, SR 157, hook up with Hwy 95 and lofty Mt. Charleston at 11,918’. Even from Boulder City, this is less than a two hour drive. Not far outside Las Vegas is the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Byway, SR 159. Any time of day the colors are spectacular, but for the extra Ah-h-h factor, early morning is amazing. Oh yes, be sure to take your camera to capture the perfect picture postcard shot. The same Ah-h-h factor typifies Valley of Fire Scenic Byway; from Boulder City, take SR 169. Probably our most famous Scenic Byway is the Las Vegas Strip, designated a Federal All-American Road, the only Scenic Byway in the US possibly more impressive at night than in daylight.

For every dollar the Nevada Commission on Tourism spends promoting our State, the documented return is $20. Wow, welcome tourists!!
