Frugal Traveler "Secrets"

I learned some new tricks in a New York Times article by Matt Gross, the Frugal Traveler. Here are a few for your consideration.

First, he recommends that all travelers should start their research using Google (Duh! I know.) But, he goes on to impart a couple of tricks you may be unaware of. First, he performs a search for his destination plus the words “frugal” and “affordable.” You’d be surprised what bargains this will unearth.

Next, he goes to Google Maps, so that he can familiarize himself with a city’s layout and neighborhoods, and search for user-created maps of worthy landmarks. Then he sets up a daily Google News alert to get a regular feed of articles sent directly to his e-mail inbox.

I found it interesting that for choosing inexpensive flights, he uses some of the sites that I also use regularly and have told you about in previous columns, such as kayak.com (Feb 2009) and ITAsoftware.com, and to pick the best seat, SeatGuru.com (April 2007).

He does mention a new site that I plan on checking out, and you might also: TripIt.com. He says that you just have to forward your confirmation e-mails over to them and they automatically turn them into an easy-to-edit itinerary. And it’s FREE. Apparently there’s even a way to access the data via TripIt’s iPhone application, and you can share the details of your trip with family and friends. Sounds nice. I just registered on TripIt myself, and I’ll let you know how it works out.

If you haven’t done so yet, it’s time to purchase your tickets to the BC Chamber’s day trip to St. George and Tuacahn production of Elton John & Tim Rice’s musical version of Aida, on Sat, Sept 12. It’s a fundraiser for the Chamber, and the seats are limited, so you won’t want to wait too long. Get your tickets at the Chamber (www.bouldercitychamber.com), 465 Nevada Way. Call 293-2034 or 294-4365 for details.
