I have always fought for those who fight for us. In my position as the Majority Leader, I was able to bring the Base Realignment and Closure Commission to Nevada to see the work our troops are doing, which prevented the closure of the Hawthorne Army Depot.  By showing the Commission the caliber of our troops, I kept Nevada’s military institutions open and doing the important work of protecting our country.

We ask so much of our military, we should provide them with the benefits and compensation they deserve. In 2008 and again in 2009, I led the Senate to increase pay for our military. I am also working to improve medical facilities for active duty military, wounded warriors, and veterans. Congress also expanded the GI bill to cover the cost of the highest tuition rates and any public college or university in a veteran’s home state. I have also helped secure hundreds of millions of dollars for the Southern Nevada Veterans hospital that is currently under construction.

We have the best trained military in the world and we must ensure they are well equipped to make that training count. Since the beginning of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I have fought for billions of dollars to ensure our soldiers travel in up-armored vehicles, the troops in our forward bases have body armor, and all our fighters have the resources they need to ensure victory. This year we will deliver much needed improvements to our state’s military facilities. We are also sending $2 million to the National Guard to build wind, solar and geothermal energy projects at 6 sites in the state, increasing national security with energy independence.

I want to thank the military spouses, parents, and children of Boulder City for their sacrifice. I pledge my commitment to further support our service members with the equipment and training they need and the support they deserve.
