Boulder City Rotary's 5th Annual Best Dam Barbecue

by Beth Walker

The Rotary Club of Boulder City proudly presents the Fifth Annual Best Dam Barbecue. Recognized as Nevada’s official championship competition, the event features delicious food and drink, family friendly entertainment, and an old fashioned street dance on both Friday and Saturday. Mark your calendars for May 22-23, 2009.

Official kick off is Friday evening starting with the “Anything Butt” competition, live entertainment, and cooking all night long. Stroll down Colorado Street, visit with competing teams, learn about their cooking methods, and purchase samples for a nominal fee.

Saturday, while the cooking competition continues, families can picnic in the park and partake in the free fun and games, like pie eating contests, watermelon seed spitting and a water balloon toss. Bring blankets and chairs and stay into the evening for the entertaining awards show and performance by returning band, “Little Sister.”

The Best Dam Barbecue is the major fundraising project for the Rotary Club of Boulder City. Proceeds help fund the “Every 15 Minutes” program for Boulder City High School. A very poignant demonstration of the tragic realities of an alcohol related car accident, local students and their families participate as actor-victims of the crash. Students witness the Jaws of Life, a flight for life helicopter transporting victims, a visit to the morgue, and a very emotional reading of obituaries. The Rotary Club of Boulder City is committed to making sure this life changing experience is presented to our youth. (Please Note: this program is not a part of the Best Dam Barbecue and takes place at a separate time.)

The Rotary Club of Boulder City supports numerous other projects at the local and international level, such as mini-grant programs for local schools, literacy and clean water projects in developing nations, and the fight to eradicate polio worldwide.

Your participation in the Best Dam Barbecue will assist Rotary in its mission. Opportunities are still available for competitors, vendors, judges and sponsors.
