A "Staycation"?

WhooHoo!! We survived August, 2008! It’s safe to venture outdoors again for fun close to home; the new buzzword is “Staycation”.

Henderson’s Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, is sponsoring Ho’olaule’a Pacific Islands Festival September 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; free admission for a Hawaiian celebration with plenty of music and food!

A tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper is September 20, at 8 p.m. Rock ‘n Roll for only $10 at the Henderson Pavilion on Green Valley Parkway; 267-4849 for more details. In keeping with the nostalgia theme, Super Run Classic Car show September 26-28 takes over Water Street, downtown Henderson with more than 1200 rods and vintage cars. Entertainment by Country’s Keith Anderson on Friday night and the Grass Roots on Saturday night. Full scoop available at 267-2171, or info@visithenderson.com.

Gilcrease Orchard grows fabulous produce at Whispering Sands Drive and Tenaya, only $2 for adult admission, children $1. Pick your own melons, squash, tomatoes, apples, pears, peaches, zucchini and other delicious in-season fruit and veggies then pay on your way out. What a fabulous opportunity for citified youngsters to visit a working farm! For more information, 645-1126 or www.gilcreaseorchard.org.

New to our town? You may not realize Colorado River Rafting is right here in Boulder City! Well, almost. Call 294-1414 to find out from Kim or Kathleen exactly what tours they have, or visit their Hacienda Hotel ticket center to book a leisurely raft trip; their live narration is fascinating!

Neat Nevada Notes: Officially named Tahoe in 1945, with a surface elevation of over 6200 feet, this startlingly beautiful Sierra Nevada lake is second deepest in the US. Oregon’s Crater Lake is deeper. Tahoe is drained only by the Truckee River. Accessible via Hwy 50, part of the lake is in California; the Cal Neva Hotel Casino at North Shore is in both states! In Roughing It, Mark Twain describes his first view of Lake Tahoe – well worth the read; it’s a magnificent lake.
