Reid Report
by Senator Harry Reid
Senate Majority Leader

Helping Nevadans Go Back To School
As parents, students and teachers in Boulder City prepare for a new school year, I’m working to help Nevada students receive the best education possible and to ensure teachers have the resources they need to help their students succeed.

Most recently, I have worked in the Senate to pass several pieces of legislation, including the Higher Education Access Act, America COMPETES Act, which the President signed in August, and the GRADUATES Act.

The Higher Education Access Act will make college more accessible by providing $17 billion in additional college aid for students.  Nevadans specifically will benefit from this legislation, as low- and middle-income students in Nevada will be eligible for an additional $7.7 million in need-based grant aid next year and an additional $66 million over the next five years.  This legislation will increase the average Pell Grant in Nevada next year by $420 to $2,800.

Next is the America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education and Science (America COMPETES) Act to help improve innovation in the United States.  The bill invests in research; strengthens educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics from elementary through graduate school; and develops infrastructure that will enhance innovation and competitiveness in our country.

Finally, there is the Getting Retention and Diplomas Up Among Today’s Enrolled Students (GRADUATES) Act to strengthen secondary schools nationwide.  Many students in Nevada and throughout our country lack the skills needed to thrive in a growing global economy.  The number of students who do not graduate is far too high, and many of the students who do earn their degree still lack the knowledge to succeed in college and the workforce.  The GRADUATES Act will help tackle this problem by providing resources for innovative school reform to help students graduate and participate in the 21st Century economy.

Nothing is more valuable than an education.  I know that firsthand.  While growing up in the mining town of Searchlight, I never imagined that I would one day be the United States Senate Majority Leader.  It was because of dedicated teachers that I received an education that has helped me get to where I am today.  That is why I work so hard to ensure that quality education is accessible to all.  I hope that all of Nevada’s students, teachers and parents have a fulfilling school year.
