First Night

First Night is fairly new to Boulder City. It is an international happening all around the country, Canada and elsewhere. At last count there is 65 celebrations and growing.

First Night is a celebration of the arts on New Year’s Eve. Although technically the last night of the year, we like to think of it as the first celebration of the New Year, thus FIRST NIGHT. The function is alcohol free and family oriented. Kids are welcome and special fun things are planned for kids of all ages. The New Year is counted down at 9 p.m. along with the city of New York so that we can all be home early!

There will be several venues in Old Town Boulder City but many businesses participate from all around the city. Headquarters will be in the Chamber of Commerce. There you will find information on all the venues and other activities. Admission buttons are available there also at $5 each and all activities are included. Button sales begin early (ON SALE NOW) so get yours right away. After they are sold out we will stamp your hand, but the buttons will be valuable collectors items in the future.

Entertainment will be at the gymnasiums (kids), the Boulder Dam Hotel, Grace Church, the Senior Center, Boulder Dam Credit Union, St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, the Gazebo and the City Hall. All are performing arts venues except the Credit Union. There the Boulder City Art Guild will have an art show with a little performing art along side. The Singing harpest Kathy Kavanaugh will entertain you while you enjoy the artwork.

As First Night grows (button sales are our only income so we rely on grants and contributions) so will the entertainment. The organization has a rule that all entertainers must be paid, even a token amount. When enough money gets into the coffers there could be big name entertainers. Some First Nights around the country draw a lot of professional entertainers and there is no reason Boulder City should not be able to do the same.

SUPPORT is what will build First Night. We need you and your family to attend this function on New Year’s Eve. We hope to see you there.
