Courage and Happiness
We adopted a Wiener Dog named Maggie Mae several years ago who had been abandoned by at least two previous owners. Well, it didn’t take long to figure out that although she had a sweet disposition she was really quite neurotic. She barked at everyone and generally speaking, had some issues.

A couple of years ago, Maggie went blind. Within a two-day period she completely lost her vision. Although it took her a while to figure out how to navigate in the house, an amazing thing happened. When Maggie lost her vision, she also lost her fear. It was as though she realized that there was nothing to be afraid of. She developed courage and actually became a much happier little dog. I kept thinking, wow, if this happened to me, I don’t think I would handle it so well. She is really a wonderful teacher. She never complains.

A little over a year ago the dreaded thing that sometimes happens to Wiener Dogs happened to Maggie; she herniated a disc in her back and her hind legs became paralyzed.

The good news is that she is not in any pain. A friend graciously gave us directions on how to build a doggie wheel chair, and my brother built one for Maggie (he even painted it purple to match her collar). Along with Maggie’s back leg paralysis is her need to wear a diaper. It’s not so easy to keep a diaper on a Wiener Dog! Out of pure desperation, I figured out that a size 12 month turtleneck onsie (baby clothes) works very well. She looks ridiculously adorable, too.

So here’s this sweet little blind Wiener Dog in a wheel chair zipping around our house just as happy as can be. She has courage, joy, a huge heart, and she just keeps going. Maggie has met and inspired many people who are faced with health challenges and difficult circumstances. She reminds us that the attitude we bring into our lives matters a lot. She encourages all of us to find the happiness in the day, and just keep going. She’s my hero.
