Historic Boom Town
Come Alive on 95!! Visit Goldfield, Nevada, about three hours northwest of Boulder City on Highway 95 to experience what was Nevada’s largest city between 1903 and 1910. Kick back in the Historic Mozart Restaurant & Saloon on Columbia to enjoy lunch and settle into the nostalgia of Nevada history before setting off on the self guided walking tour; at an elevation of 5689’, it will be cooler than home! The Mozart opened in 1934, and is ready for business Wednesday through Sunday.

Considered by some to be the “Last Great Boom Town” in Nevada, Goldfield was founded in 1902 when two miners discovered gold. By 1907 the population exceeded 20,000, sported three newspapers, five banks, and a mining stock exchange. Goldfield mines gave up ore in excess of $86 million, while the community survived three major fires and a 1913 flash flood.

The Earp brothers, Virgil and Wyatt, took up residence in 1904. Soon Virgil was sworn in as deputy sheriff, and Wyatt hired on as a pit boss at the Northern Saloon. Virgil’s “term of office” was, however, brief. He contracted pneumonia and passed away in 1905; Wyatt left town shortly thereafter.

In 1906, Goldfield was site of the Gans-Nelson fight. It went 42 rounds, and once held the Guinness World Record!

Esmeralda County’s Courthouse in Goldfield opened in August of 1908, and has served as home to elected officials ever since. The County Clerk’s office has Virgil Earp’s handwritten oath of office safely stored for guests to view. Eighteen jail cells on two levels are still used. The Courthouse is Nevada Historical Marker 14.

Goldfield Chamber of Commerce is on Hwy. 95 between Euclid and Fifth, 775-485-3560. The friendly staff will cheerfully give you the walking tour map, a copy of Nevada Silver Trails, and if it’s really your lucky day, Virginia Ridgeway will be hanging out in the area to give you an enthusiastic overview of Goldfield. Virginia is responsible for securing the Nevada Commission on Tourism Grant funding “Come Alive on 95!!” a campaign to revitalize Highway 95.
