Reid Report
by Senator Harry Reid
Democratic Leader

Working For Nevada In 2006 and in the Years to Come
As families gather to celebrate the holidays, we reflect on the past year and look forward.  For me, this past year has been an eventful one, full of accomplishments and challenges.  After the historic elections that made Democrats the majority in Congress, I was elected as the Majority Leader of the United States Senate.

As the leader of the Senate, I will make sure that Nevada’s priorities still come first by addressing important issues like Yucca Mountain, homeland security, immigration reform, energy independence, growth, water, and the environment.

Looking back, here are some of the things we’ve done for Nevada over the last year.

I have continued to fight Yucca Mountain.  I introduced bi-partisan legislation that lays out a strategy for the interim storage of nuclear waste at the facilities where the waste is produced, not Yucca Mountain, and convinced the chairman of the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee that interim storage of nuclear waste must be addressed.   Now, more than ever, I’ll leverage my leadership position to prevent Nevada from becoming the nation’s nuclear dumping ground.

Nevada’s 250,000 veterans are always a top priority of mine.  I secured funding for the new veterans’ hospital in Las Vegas, continued to fight for concurrent receipt and worked to expand the Community Based Outpatient Clinics.

I secured nearly $3 million in the 2007 budget to address our ongoing health care challenges.  This includes $350,000 for the Southern Nevada Health District to expand its immunization program to address low immunization rates.

I have continued working to make Nevada safer by securing funding for Nevada’s State Homeland Security grant program and making sure Nevada’s military bases have the tools they need to protect our citizens.

In August, I was proud to attend the groundbreaking for the Clark County Shooting Park, a project that has been a priority of mine for many years.  In 2002, I conveyed 3000 acres of land to Clark County for the development of this facility.  Since that time I’ve helped deliver more than $60 million for the construction of this site that will, when finished, be the foremost shooting facility in the U.S.

Nevada comes first for me, it always has and it always will.  I will continue fighting on behalf of all Boulder City residents and all Nevadans to ensure that 2007 is even better than 2006.
