CES 2014

With a record-setting 3,000 plus exhibitors and two million square feet of exhibit space, the Consumer Electronics Show was one big playground for big tech kids like myself.

It looked like the first thing I needed to do was build a larger living room so I could fit in a new 110” color TV. TVs are not just big this year but they are curved to provide a more immersed experience and less reflection on the screen.

There was a 3D printing area this year because of all the new 3D printers. The printers have gotten better each year. I like the Form 1 printer from formlabs.com. One of the printers can print your 3D objects in sugar so you can print it and eat it. If you don’t want a 3D printer, you can still get your 3D files printed online and have the printed items shipped to you using shapeways.com or sculpteo.com.

Wearable tech was big this year including hats, headbands, wristbands, shirts, pants and shoes. There was a kiosk you stepped on and selected clothes you wanted to see yourself in. Right in front of you appeared your full size image wearing the clothes you chose. When you moved around, the digital clothes also moved. It was like a digital mirror, and I was impressed. You can design your own outfit at clo3d.com.

From electric powered cars to hydrogen powered cars, they were all there at CES. There are some exciting vehicles coming in the future. Bob Carter, Toyota Senior Vice President, told the crowd that the fuel-cell vehicle (FCV) is "really going to change our world, sooner rather than later."

Let’s not forget the new pet tech for our furry 4-legged friends. You can place a camera on the collar of your pet that will take pictures while it is active, using motion sensors. There are four basic picture modes: playing, running, walking and resting. When your pet rests too long you will get a text to let you know it has not been moving for a while. More information can be found at pawscam.com.
