What the QR is it?

At first it looks like The Rorschach Test, an ink blot test. But it’s not. QR Codes are two dimensional barcodes (datamatrix) that are designed to have their contents decoded at a high speed. The acronym QR is derived from the term Quick Response.

How Do They Work?

QR Codes are designed to work with today’s mobile phones such as the iPhone. These phones usually have a digital camera built in to their programming.

The phone’s camera, along with special decoding software, can be used to capture a picture of the QR Code. The QR Code software decoder can then transform this data into a meaningful action for the mobile phone, such as connecting to a web address, downloading an MP3, dialing a telephone number, or even prompting your e-mail clients with a sender address. These applications and more can all be done within a matter of milliseconds.

QR Codes have become more popular than the typical barcode, as the typical barcode can only hold a maximum of 20 digits, whereas the QR Code can hold up to 7,089 characters. To give you an idea, all the text and spaces in this article are only 1,190 characters. This makes the use and diversity of QR Codes much more appealing than the older technology used by the barcode.

The QR code shown here will take you to our website so you don’t have to type in the name www.applebyarts.com. I can also make a QR code to hold this entire article, with room to spare.

The affiliated software programs can also scan big QR codes, made up of 16 smaller QR codes. This technology will continue to grow and evolve, and we look forward to seeing what it can do for us next.
