Save the Seniors - Thanks the Troops
A need to keep Boulder City High School Seniors safe on Graduation Night spurred Sunrise Rotary members to organize and launch the all night party in 1991. Wow, luring those Seniors to safety got pricey! Necessity being the Mother of Invention, a fundraiser was the solution. Starting out with an Octoberfest flavor, the Wurstfest evolved. This year’s event will be held on September 25, so be sure to support Sunrise Rotary’s ongoing venture to keep our graduating classes safe!

Operation Thank You? In 2007 Karin Watkins with the Hacienda Hotel decided it would be appropriate to pay it forward by hosting a weekend in Boulder City for Air Force Personnel selected by peers at Nellis AFB. Then she called Kathleen Wood at Black Canyon River Rafting for a raft tour and me for a Cruise on the “Desert Princess”. Our first recipient came out the weekend of September 21-23, 2007. These three Boulder City businesses have hosted select Air Force Personnel and their families ever since! Thank you to Karin for spearheading the plan!

NEAT NEVADA NOTES: Site of John Wayne’s last movie, the Shootist, Carson City is our State Capital. Carson City and neighboring Virginia City are the only two County Seats remaining that were so designated from inception of our Statehood, October 31, 1864. Every kid in the State knew Nevada Day meant no school on Halloween before voters approved celebrating it on the last Friday in October; now it’s just another three day weekend.

Carson City was named after the Carson River by Abraham Curry in 1860, and has the only combined City-County government in our State. Golfing is year-round on the area’s “Divine Nine” courses. Home to the Nevada State Railroad Museum, and the Ghost Walking Tour, Carson City offers something for everyone! The next Ghost Tour is September 25. A period costumed guide escorts you past historic homes, offering narrative with tales both tall and true. And yes, possible sighting of ghostly spirits who survive to this day!
