Reid Report
by Senator Harry Reid
Senate Majority Leader

Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge
As everyone in Boulder City knows, this year was the 75th anniversary of the dedication of Hoover Dam. It was the construction of the Dam that also built Boulder City.  Hoover Dam powers Nevada, Arizona and California and is one of the architectural wonders of the world.

But after September 11, 2001 it was evident that we needed to do more to protect Hoover Dam. Security checkpoints were put in place, but made interstate traffic a mess.

The solution to the traffic and security problems on Hoover Dam is almost as architecturally astounding as Hoover Dam itself. Last month I helped dedicate the Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, which is named after my good friend former Governor Mike O’Callaghan and an Arizona patriot, Corporal Pat Tilman, who died serving our nation. Mike and Pat were as strong in their personal lives as they were powerful in their professional lives.  They were loyal to their states, their country, their families, their teammates, and their troops, as well as their friends.  And within six short weeks of each other in the spring of 2004, both left before we had a chance to say goodbye.

However, with the completion of the Memorial Bridge, some estimate that heavy truck traffic will return to Boulder City. I understand the concerns of the local community and have been working with Mayor Roger Tobler and the Boulder City Council on a solution.

For the past several years, I have worked to get millions in funding for the completion of a 17-mile bypass road that will alleviate congestion and remove truck traffic from downtown Boulder City. Just this week, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced they will spend $35 million on the Boulder City Bypass in the coming year.

I am continuing to fight for federal funding for the Boulder City Bypass and working with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to ensure that it is appropriately prioritized.  And as long as I’m Nevada’s senior Senator, I will do everything in my power to make sure the Boulder City Bypass is fully funded.
