Friends of the Police Department
Throughout my auspicious 18 years serving Boulder City as a police officer, I have often witnessed chasms, just as with any business, between the needs of the organization and available funding. I, along with a group of very capable and honorable community servants, with the assistance of Attorney George Kalesis, have created a non-profit organization, Friends of the Boulder City Police Department.

We will be embarking upon raising funds to help bridge some of the gaps that we feel currently exist. While we will not be purchasing police cars, license plate readers or a cache of automatic weapons, we will be funding many of the philanthropic efforts the Police Department wishes to embark upon. Some examples may be sponsoring youth sports, providing assistance to send officers to the Law Enforcement Memorial, specialized community-based training for members of the Police Department and other community policing efforts as deemed appropriate by the governing body. We will also be exploring options involving the creation of a scholarship fund for our Police Explorers, who have demonstrated a desire to become law enforcement professionals and wish to advance their education. If you are interested in supporting this propitious organization, feel free to contact any of the board members. Charter Board Members, in addition to me, are Pete Mello, Tony Sheppmann, Michael Giroux and George Kalesis.

Boulder City Rotary’s Best Dam BBQ Supports police efforts through Every 15 Minutes Program.

The Boulder City Police Department conducts a public awareness program entitled Every 15 Minutes. This program targets high school students and educates them as to the effects of alcohol and/or drug impaired drivers. We conduct this program every other year. Funding for this program comes from a number of sources. However, the lion’s share is donated from the Rotary Club of Boulder City. Like the Friends of the Boulder City Police Department, the Rotary Club of Boulder City, along with Sunrise Rotary, do a lot to promote and develop Boulder City to ensure it is the safest place to live, work and visit. It is my pleasure to thank both organizations for their continued support.

Until next month, stay safe and embrace levity.
