Hangin' At Home

October is refreshingly fall-ish, finally! Venture outside to enjoy our fresh high desert air. Visit Art in the Park this weekend to support our Community Hospital. My emergency room experience there was excellent! I can’t imagine Boulder City without it.

While you’re at it, drop into the Boulder City Hoover Dam Museum – kids of all ages love its local lore, call (702) 294-1988 for cost and hours. After soaking up fresh air and history, roll on down the hill to Hemenway Harbor on Lake Mead. Las Vegas Boat Harbor has jet ski rentals, or if you don’t have a private boat, there is a Mississippi River style Paddlewheel boat offering an impartial lake view of the new bridge – pretty spectacular structure. Like it or not, completion is about a year away! Call Las Vegas Boat Harbor at (702) 293-1191 or for boat tours, call (701) 293-6180. To volunteer for outdoor activities and projects with the National Park Service, contact Nancy Bernard at (702) 293-8714.

Wurstfest, held last weekend, is sponsored by the Boulder City Sunrise Rotary Club, to raise funds for the all night party aimed at keeping BC High School Seniors safe on graduation night. It’s a very successful project! Thanks Sunrise Rotarians! Oh yes, as the infamous auctioneers mention from time to time, this writer owns responsibility for naming Wurstfest!

Neat Nevada Notes: Elwood Mead was Commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation when the Boulder Canyon Project was conceived. Originally called the Boulder Dam Recreation Area, in 1964 the Lake Mead National Recreation Area became official. Named for Dr. Mead, our lake is about 110 miles long with over 500 miles of shoreline. At this writing, the lake temperature at 3 foot depth is 81 degrees.

Visit http://www.nps.gov/lame for details and interesting tidbits such as, “Rattlesnakes bite about 1,000 people a year in the United States. Still, the risk of being killed by one is 20 times less than the risk of being struck by lightning.” How comforting!

Perform a random act of kindness! Take time to put shopping carts in cart parks where they belong – the car you save may be your own!!
