The Academy of Science and Mathematics

The 2009-2010 school year is now in full swing! I am excited, as many new opportunities have landed on my doorstep. I have begun my first year in the Las Vegas Youth Orchestra, and have also, with so much hard work, been accepted into the CCSD Honor Orchestra.

My most exciting accomplishment is being accepted to the best academic middle school in the State of Nevada, Hyde Park Academy of Science and Mathematics. I am taking 9th grade level classes, and working much harder than I ever have before. I also play in their Advanced and Chamber Orchestras, under the direction of Jeremy Woolstenhulme. He is a nationally recognized and highly respected teacher/composer. I am again very excited to attend the Academy.

The academics are amazing at Hyde Park. Academy students go through a “Pre-AP” curriculum to prepare them for Advanced Placement classes in high school. Hyde Park also wins many state and National competitions, like the Science Olympiad, and VEX Robotics (Hyde Park is ranked #2 in world finals).

Their intermediate, ensemble, advanced, and chamber orchestras have participated in the national Heritage Festivals competition for eight years. They have won gold medals, and have taken first, second, and third places between the three lower classes (invitational competition). Mr. Woolstenhulme’s chamber competes in the National Orchestra Competition every year, which is sponsored by American String Teachers Association. They have won Gold and first place ranking every year he has taught there.

Two years ago in London, they won “best overall” middle school orchestra in the world. They were even invited to the Midwest Clinic in 2008 which is an international high school orchestra competition. Hyde Park is one of only two middle schools to ever accomplish this. I am one of the better players in advanced orchestra, but in chamber I’m in the back. At least I have the opportunity to play in this orchestra, no matter what chair, it’s still an honor.

My plate is quite full. The challenges ahead, both musically and academically are rigorous, but I am eager to take them on.
