The Arts by Darrell McGarvey Boulder City Art Guild Artist Profile - Shirley Jeane Shirley Jeane began painting on a full time basis after a successful career in computer science and technical management, in order to fulfill a lifelong dream of developing her creative skills.

She has studied art at the Bemis School of Art, the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts, Pasadena City College and under various watercolor instructors. She has a BA from the University of Texas and an MBA from the University of Southern California. She represented the United States on the People to People cultural exchange program with China. She is a signature member and past President of the Nevada Watercolor Society and a member of the Boulder City Art Guild. She teaches beginning and intermediate watercolor on a regular basis.

Shirley also consults in graphic arts, multimedia and computer technology used in the production and marketing of art objects. A particular interest of hers is the introduction of digital technology for capturing reference photos, producing archival prints and producing marketing materials. Her work has garnered many commissions for portrait, landscape and still life paintings where she strives to capture the character and personality of the subject. When asked about her work, she says “I believe that art is not complete until the viewer is drawn into the experience the artist is portraying. Each of my paintings has a story behind it that expresses a moment in time however brief, that prompts the viewer to reflect, remember and exhale in recognition. I strive to capture the delight, beauty and mystery that exists in every aspect of life.”

Shirley has been a member of the Boulder City Art Gallery in the Boulder Dam Hotel for many years. Her work in watercolor is outstanding. More recently her computer-generated artwork has become very popular, especially her southwest oriented pieces. Her “Valley of Fire Arch” digital rendition (shown here) was used as the cover art at the 2007 Boulder City Fine Arts Festival. Visit the Boulder City Art Guild at www.bouldercityartguild.org
