Family Pets

With spring, our thoughts often turn to bunnies, ducklings, puppies and other baby animals as spring-time gifts. It really pays to research animals before you decide what kind of animal to add to your family.

I speak from experience. Last November my husband and I fell in love with some dwarf hamsters at the pet store. Of course, we had to get 2 because we didn’t want one to be lonely. The folks at the pet store assured us that we were buying 2 females. Shortly after Christmas, we were gifted with a litter of 3 new baby dwarf hamsters. And again, in January, we were given another litter of 7 baby hamsters. If you have done your math, you know that our 2 “female” hamsters have now become 12 hamsters.

Had I but done my research, I would have known that a Mother Dwarf Hamster can get pregnant again immediately after giving birth, and even though the Father Dwarf Hamster can be a good parent, there are good reasons for separating the parents. Happily, we have been able to find good homes for all the babies, and Mom and Dad now live in separate cages.

For those of you who are considering adding a new pet to your family this year, the Boulder City Library can offer you information on choosing and raising new pets.

You may question what kind of pet would work well with your life-style. Some pets require a lot of care and attention while others thrive on minimal attention. Many pets love to be part of a community of other critters, while some pets are happier being an “only” pet.

Once you have decided on what type of animal friend to add to your family, you will need to know how to take care of your newest family member. We can help you with all of this information.

At the library, we can help you find lots of books and articles about taking care of cats, birds, dogs, reptiles, amphibians, rodents, and all sorts of animal companions to help make you and your new family member feel at home together.
