Every 15 Minutes
The Police and Fire Departments, with the assistance of several other Departments throughout the City, individuals and corporate supporters, will once again offer, “Every 15 Minutes”. This year’s program is once again made available through a generous donation by the Rotary Club of Boulder City, established in 1937.

This program is designed to invoke thought into the minds of our youth. We want them to experience first hand all of the realities of drinking or drugged driving. Every 15 Minutes someone loses his or her life as a result of driving under the influence.

The decision to drive while under the influence is common, even here in Boulder City, where arrests for D.U.I are all too common.

Hundreds of staff hours are invested in creating this two-day event held every two years. The investment is small in comparison to the lives lost each and every year.

This program, involving our Boulder City High School sophomores, juniors and seniors, will help them and their families understand the consequences of poor decisions. It will also help to explain the subsequent death that can occur while driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or illegal narcotics.

Participating parents and their children will embark upon a whirlwind of emotions. The event kicks off with a mock car crash where many of our high school students will be pronounced dead.

Parents and their children will then be introduced to a variety of activities designed to make them think about what it would be like to lose a loved one, from writing their obituary to the parent picking out their children’s clothes for the mock funeral.

A lot of work, perhaps – impactive to say the least – we are hopeful that this is the closest that our participants will ever come to being a victim of a D.U.I crash. The program and subsequent events are scheduled for March 25th and 26th at the Boulder City High School and it is generally not open to the public.

Until next month, stay safe!
