Boulder City United Methodist Church

by Sue Burkholder

Boulder City United Methodist Church is celebrating its tenth year as a faith community in Boulder City. Founded by a handful of parishioners in January 1999, the congregation has grown to approximately 100. Led by Pastor John Ritenour, our church family is made up of all faith backgrounds - bridging four generations - including empty nesters, snow birds, three-generation families, retirees and young couples just starting out.

In addition to United Methodist tradition, the mission and core values formed by the congregation are designed to move the Christian message beyond worship. Our mission statement reads, “OUR LORD SAYS WE ARE TO GO IN HIS NAME: In our lives, our families, and society we will demonstrate our faith through grace, worship, fellowship, discipleship, prayer, diversity, outreach, and stewardship.”

Four ministries are emphasized by BCUMC - worship, Christian study, fellowship and outreach. Small groups extend the worship experience, including Church Women United, an informal men’s weekly coffee, book study group, care ministry, prayer group and Hacienda buffet night gatherings. Fellowship time follows the service each Sunday and a monthly potluck brings the congregation together to share food, fun and fellowship. Like so many in Boulder City, members of the congregation are involved in the larger community through Lend-a-Hand, the Senior Center, Meals on Wheels, Chatty Hatters and Emergency Aid of Boulder City.

A traditional worship service including hymns, scriptures, message and Communion (open to all) begins at 10 a.m. every Sunday at the Senior Center of Boulder City located at 813 Arizona. Brian Fox leads an adult Bible study at 9 a.m. and Sunday school for kindergarten through 12th grades meets during worship.

What’s next for our faith community? Installation of a drainage culvert, grading and fill will soon begin on our land on Utah Street, purchased from the City in 2006. And drawings, models and permits are ready for the next phase in building a permanent home for our growing congregation.
