Summer Reading
You are, perhaps, familiar with the phrase “Use it or lose it”. Studies show that students who don’t read during the summer can actually lose their skills and do not start the new school year at the same reading level at which they ended the previous school year. It is particularly true of “new readers” who have just finished first or second grades.

The answer? Keep reading during the summer. The cool thing is that summer reading doesn’t have to be anything that is “required”. Summer reading can even be fun.

We try to help make summer reading more fun by having a Summer Reading Program. For six weeks, June 13 through July 25, kids can read books, win free books, and enter a drawing to win even more prizes.

The theme for the Summer Library Program this year is “Be Creative @ Your Library”, and is open to the youngest readers who have books read to them through teenagers. Younger participants may earn a free book by reading 10 picture-books and listing the books on a reading log. Older participants may earn a free book by reading and listing 5 chapter-books. Each participant may earn up to 6 free books.

The special Kick-Off Program will be a presentation by storyteller Glenda Bonin on Saturday, June 13th. Our Grand Finale Program with entertainer S. Frank Stringham (also known as “S”) is planned for Saturday, July 25th. Both programs begin at 11 a.m. and will be held in the Community Room.

We hold other great programs during the summer. Wednesday mornings at 10 we have Story Times for 2, 3, 4 and 5-year-olds and their caregivers. Fridays, we will have craft programs for preschoolers through 6th graders from 10 a.m. to Noon. On the 2nd Tuesday of each month, we have a visit from one of our local Park Rangers at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 25th, at 4 p.m., we will have a special presentation of Tales from Old England presented by the Lady Elinor Fettiplace.

Other programs are being planned, so stop by the Boulder City Library.
