Complementary Care
David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD, is a two-time brain cancer survivor who wrote an extremely insightful book entitled Anti Cancer A New Way of Life. He is a physician who is a proponent of traditional treatment for cancer, including chemotherapy and radiation, in conjunction with complementary care.

Of course, there are many factors that influence our health; some that we can do something about, others that we cannot. If there is something that we can do to prevent or contribute to the elimination of cancer, then it’s worth knowing about and making a few changes. This is a science based book that explains the role nutrition, inflammation, and stress play in either creating terrain that is fertile ground for cancer to grow and spread, or in creating terrain difficult for cancer cells to thrive in or develop in the first place.

He explains how inflammation compromises the immune system, and discusses at length ways to increase the functionality of the immune system. His plan includes 1) eliminating toxic substances 2) adopting an anti cancer diet 3) getting adequate physical activity and 4) finding emotional peace. The anti cancer diet Dr. Servan-Schreiber suggests is not radical. Along with being rooted in science and physiology, it is practical and attainable.

We can introduce foods that act like medicines to our diets, such as green tea, which contains catechins that help to block the formation of new blood vessels by cancerous cells. We can cook with turmeric, a delicious spice that acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory. We can decrease our sugar intake, as sugar promotes inflammation, and use a natural low glycemic sweetener such as agave syrup (it's delicious and can be found in your local health food store). We can decrease or eliminate antibiotic and hormone induced foods, and decrease our exposure to chemicals present in our foods and cleaning products. We can eliminate hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated fats, and return to a real food diet rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, a variety of whole grains, omega 3 rich olive oil, and lean chemical free meats. We need fresh air and exercise daily to be well. We need to learn how to relax and balance our minds. Anti Cancer A New Way of Life is a must read for all of us.
