So Why Travel?
As we come to the end of the year, and begin the new, let’s pursue why some people travel and some don’t. If you’re reading this column, you probably do – or would like to, or wish you could. That’s a good start.

I recently ran across a quote by Saint Augustine that I find appropriate to the discussion: “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.”
We all have different philosophies about how to spend our money. Some people want something tangible for their hard-earned buck. Others are content with an experience and memories; these are the travelers.
Travel can change your life and your attitudes. Here’s an example. Unhappy with his life, a high-powered exec with Microsoft happened onto a poster in REI for a “Climb for Clean Air” of Mt. Ranier, a benefit for the American Lung Association. He made that climb, and went on to climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. After his hike of Mt. Kilimanjaro, he encountered a mother who had walked miles, but was unable to save the life of her child, due to lack of medicine at her remote clinic. Deeply touched, he is now heavily involved with an organization (villagereach.org) which focuses on distributing drugs to remote villages.
On a smaller, yet no less significant scale, a couple who went with me to Africa last year were so moved by a visit to a school for orphaned and poor children in a Nairobi, Kenya slum (Hope Streams Academy), they have become major donors, sponsoring the building of classrooms, teachers’ salaries, a field trip for the children, operating expenses, and more. I would venture to say this trip to Africa was a life-transforming experience.
I’m not saying everyone will, or needs to get this involved. My life has changed in myriad ways since I began traveling. My horizons have widened; I have more compassion for people unlike myself, and take more interest in world affairs. Why do I lead tours? Because I want to share these experiences, and possibly help widen the horizons of others. Cruises are fun, and hop-on, hop-off bus tours give you an overview. But I suggest you try a stay-in-one-place, in-depth experience once in awhile. Do it alone, with a friend or loved-one, or with a small group, like one of mine. Go ahead, turn that page.
