Hats Off To Our Recreation Department Staff
During the winter months, the City’s Recreation Center is used at an amazing capacity. In addition to our regularly scheduled activities there, which attract hundreds of patrons, including Tiny Tots, Gymnastics, Belly Dancing, Aikido and Open Gym, the winter sport activities are in full swing too.

When you drive by the Recreation Department on any given weeknight, finding a parking space can be challenging.

Imagine the number of people coming and going with the Youth Basketball program supporting 15 teams with 135 players, Youth Floor Hockey program supporting 12 teams with 96 players, Adult Basketball program supporting 6 teams with 54 players, and Adult Volleyball program supporting 8 teams with 72 players. Now add 100+ gymnasts, 50 Tiny Totters, Belly Dancing and Aikido students, open gym users, a few clinics, tournaments and special events such as the Doodlebug Bazaar, and you have one hopping place. The middle and high schools often run into facility issues and they get absorbed into the mix.

As you can see, juggling the facility schedule can be a delicate balancing act at which the Recreation Department staff does a fantastic job. Now that’s just the Recreation Center at 900 Arizona Street. Add into the mix spring softball, baseball, football and fall soccer with managing clinics, games, coaches and field scheduling and maintenance.

Imagine, in addition to everything mentioned above, the Recreation Department also manages 17 parks on approximately 124 acres, ABC Park with the Art Center, Fitness Center, Youth Center and gymnasium, the Nevada Way Recreation Building, home to the Jujitsu program, the golf course, pool and racquet ball complex, Bootleg Canyon Trails and Eldorado Valley. Don’t leave out the special events like the Teeny Bopper Dance, Turkey Shoot, Damboree and 31’ers activities.

It’s an amazing staff that keeps the plates spinning, with so many areas to cover. With only 8 full time staff and a couple of part time staff, the volume of work accomplished on a daily basis is staggering. Hats off to the Recreation Department staff for doing such an amazing job at providing quality recreation opportunities to Boulder City residents.
