Mayor's Brief

Christmas History
We have always enjoyed a wonderful Holiday Season here in Boulder City and we have many individuals to thank for sponsoring and volunteering their time over the years. I want to thank RoseAnn Miele for the following information.

The first Holiday Season in Boulder City was celebrated with a Thanksgiving dinner and a dance held in the Anderson Brothers’ mess hall. In 1931, the Fire Fighters sponsored this event. 104 cars passed the gates of Boulder City to attend.

The first Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony (1931) took place in about the same spot it takes place today, Frank Crowe Park. In 1931 this location was described as “Recreation Hall Corner,” at Nevada Blvd. and Cherry Street.

In the December, 1971 Boulder City News it stated: “That grand old fellow with the whiskers, Santa Claus, is going to appear in Boulder City on Dec. 3 at 7 p.m., all decked out on the city’s fire truck. The Christmas lights on Arizona Street will be lighted as Santa enters the city, the high school band will be there...”. The band played for 20 minutes and Santa then handed out candy near the theater.

In December 1973, Boulder City News reported: “In addition to the high school band, there were flag twirlers, junior and senior high majorettes and the drill team. The entire group paraded along NV Way to Arizona and on to the park across from Central Market.”

In 1978, Fire Chief Robert Sears and the Fire Department escorted Santa to the gazebo adjacent to City Hall.

Boulder City News reported on Nov. 26, 1998 the following: "According to Chamber of Commerce historians, the Christmas tree has been in place for the past 10 years. Gail Motley and Eva McGarvey spearheaded the fund-raising effort to purchase the tree. The Motleys donated the iron work that encircles the tree. Carol Gaydos designed the decorations placed on the ironwork. Attending the lighting is Chris Mouse, Chamber mascot created by Connie Mancillas."

Of course for many, many years we have enjoyed our official Santa, Mr. Wayne Putz. He began in 1975 and Mrs. Putz joined him a few years later.

I thank all of you for keeping the Christmas spirit strong in Boulder City. Let us all remember the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and be generous and caring this Christmas season. Reach out to Emergency Aid and other charitable organizations. It is my hope and prayer that we all have a safe and wonderful Christmas Holiday.
