You Too Can Be An Artist
This will be the fourth year that the Art Center offers a weekend of Raku Pottery Firing at the Center in ABC Park. Starting at 9 a.m. each day, potters Stephen Wells and Donna Lamm & Associates of Pahrump Valley Pottery will visit Boulder City on Saturday, March 29th and Sunday, March 30th to share their expertise in Raku pottery.

Raku Pottery Firing involves heating glazed pots to 1800 degrees F in a specialized Raku kiln. This kiln is assembled at the Art Center especially for this event. Pots are removed and placed in a container of combustible material. The cooling process used in Raku fractures the glaze, creating what is known as “crazing.” Once pots are cooled, they are removed and doused with water and scrubbed clean. The result is a metallic effect that can only be acquired by this method.

Boulder City Art Center instructors create a variety of pots and decorative items that are available for you to glaze and then view the firing process. The clay items available for firing start at $5 each and include the use of glazes and firing. You don’t need to be present to have your piece fired. It’s very interesting to watch the firing process. If time permits, I highly recommend you stay to watch this process. Come early for the best selection of clay pots and decorative items to choose from. Once the pieces are cooled, you can take them home or pick them up at the Art Center on any scheduled lab day.

You won’t want to miss the March 7th Roller Skate Night at the ABC Park Gymnasium. Grades Kindergarten - 3rd come from 6 - 7:15 p.m. and grades 4 - 8 come from 7:30 - 8:45 p.m. The fee is only $3 and limited skates are available for $1.

The Boulder City Pool Underwater Egg Hunt takes place on Saturday, March 15th at 1 p.m. and is fun for all ages. The fee is just $1.50 for youths and seniors and $2 for adults.

Spring Break is offered for Kindergarten - 5th grade kids March 17 - 21 from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the Recreation Center at 900 Arizona Street.
