Reid Report
by Senator Harry Reid
Senate Majority Leader

Confronting The Challenges of 2008
The nation’s unstable economy is hitting the middle-class hard.  In fact, last month I spoke to many Nevadans across the state who are feeling the squeeze.  The foreclosure crisis, skyrocketing health care costs, and the high price of gas are just of few of the economic challenges confronting Nevada families.

On top of that, our state is in the middle of a budget crisis that threatens funding for many important Nevada programs, including education.

Congress made progress in addressing some of these challenges in 2007, but there is so much more to be done.

As the Senate Majority Leader, I will continue my work to make Nevada the leader in renewable energy by developing our state’s rich solar, wind and geothermal resources.  This will save consumers money on their energy bills, reduce pollution and create good-paying Nevada jobs.

I will also continue my work with state and local leaders to end Nevada’s foreclosure crisis, which affects us all.  Last year we made some progress by passing legislation to help keep people in their homes.  While I don’t support bailing out speculators or those who bought more than they could afford, I will do everything I can to help keep victims of predatory lending in their homes.

Good roads are key to keeping Nevada’s economy moving. That is why in 2007 I helped secure $250,000 for the Boulder City Bypass project to divert heavy vehicle traffic around Boulder City.  This year, I will continue working with Boulder City’s leaders to identify key transportation projects that will reduce traffic congestion and accidents, while keeping pace with the area’s growth.

To strengthen our economy and keep jobs in America, we need schools that produce a workforce that can compete in the global economy.  That means investing in our classrooms, making college more affordable and addressing the flaws in the No Child Left Behind Act, which is scheduled for reauthorization this year.

There is no doubt that we face serious challenges in 2008, but I will continue working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to address those issues in ways that make Nevada an even better place to live and raise a family.
