A Kid's View

Incredible Journey
In June I went to Washington, D.C. because my G.A.T.E. Class won for the State of Nevada in our NEED (National Energy Education Development) project we’d been working on. We flew in on Wednesday. It all began Thursday morning. Thursday, I met congressman Jon Porter. We went on a “Monuments by Moonlight” tour from 7:30 - 11 p.m. We weren’t at the hotel until about 12:30 a.m., but it was a busy day.

Friday was here and the rest of the NEED groups came. We played an “energy feud” (like family feud) game based on a questionnaire we filled out earlier that day. Then it was lights out!
It was now Saturday morning. We went to Arlington cemetery. We saw Kennedy’s grave, the eternal flame, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  We got to see George Washington’s plantation. Then Oh Man!, the view of the Potomac River was great from Washington’s house! The following evening we had dinner and traded stuff from each of our states. What fun!

Sunday morning we went to the national cathedral. I saw an Episcopal Church service, then I got to see the city from its observatory. That evening I went on a dinner cruise. There was dinner, dancing, and we got to see the river while on the boat. It was raining and it was beautiful!

Monday was the big day. We went and met with Commissioner Bob Johnson at the Bureau of Reclamation (the guy in charge of reclamation drinking and using water). We talked about water issues and then we went to an awards ceremony in the same building (at the U.S. Department of the Interior). My Principal got to sing the National Anthem, (which was great), and Mr. Johnson presented only our school with our award. We then left to see Senator Harry Reid (did you know he is the 3rd most powerful man in the world?). We then got a tour of the Capitol Building. We even got to see the Senate in session for 10 minutes! We ended the day by seeing a Washington Nationals game vs. my favorite team, the LA Angels of Anaheim! And the Angels won 3-2! Most people left that day, but we didn’t leave until Tuesday. It was INCREDIBLE!
