Trek Into History
Five or six years after Sara Denton and 3 other civic minded Boulder City Ladies launched Art in the Park, the issue of sketchy weather needed to be resolved. Sara, as Chairman, called the Weather Bureau, actually talked to a real person, and asked what weekend in Southern Nevada had the best weather.

Ah-ha! A new question! “Mrs. Denton, I don’t know but I’ll research it and call you back.” The return call advised no bad storms recorded the first weekend in October, so ever since, Art in the Park owns the first full weekend in October.

For a great outing close to home, mark your calendar for our 44th Annual Art in the Park, October 7 and 8. To volunteer, call 294-1611. To enjoy everything from fine art to clever crafts, join the festivities in our Old Town Parks from 9 am to 5 pm each day to support our Boulder City Hospital. While you’re in Old Town, visit and support our hometown merchants! Although I’ve said it before, we are all SO lucky to live in Boulder City.

Hardy folks built Hoover Dam and settled here, establishing our history. October 21 presents a wonderful opportunity to meet people who lived our history. Hear first hand about life in Ragtown without air conditioning. Boy, are we spoiled! Experience a roundtable discussion with early Boulder City Residents Laura Godbey Smith, Violet Oppedyk Tract, and Lee Tilman who worked on the Dam. Participants include folks who grew up in Las Vegas. For this special look at Boulder City, Hoover Dam and Las Vegas in the old days, visit the Clark County Museum, 1830 S. Boulder Highway in Henderson, 455-7955. Reception at 5:30 pm, with the round table scheduled from 6:30 to 9:30. Thank you Lee, Laura and Violet, for sharing.

NEAT NEVADA NOTES – Did you know within NEVADA State borders we live among an estimated 314 mountain ranges all angled northeast-southwest? Boundary Peak at 13,141 feet is the winner; Mt. Charleston rises to 11,915 feet, while there are 51 vertically challenged peaks only exceeding 9,000 feet!
