Parenting Skills Offered in Boulder City
Parenting in the 21st Century is a complicated profession – not simply a part-time job. Struggling parents speak to me nearly every day who long for answers to those tough questions involving raising a rambunctious adolescent.

The City of Boulder City embraced the Parent Project almost two years ago in an effort to provide our parents with a viable support mechanism to ensure that their children grow up to be healthy members of the community. The Parent Project, a 10–16 week program specifically designed for parents of strong-willed or out-of-control adolescent children, is offered on a regular basis. This program, taught one evening a week, teaches identification, prevention and intervention strategies for destructive adolescent behaviors, such as poor school attendance, alcohol use or runaways.

The City of Boulder City enlisted the professional assistance of Bud Fry, co-founder of the Parent Project, to teach a cadre of community based instructors to facilitate the program. Throughout the 40-hour training program, instructors were taught the necessary information and provided the tools to facilitate this program to members of our community. A lot of work and significant commitments were made by class participants as well as on behalf of Bud and his wife Toni – to which we all owe a great deal of gratitude. Our goal is short and simple – give the parents the tools they need to be more effective.

We recognize this program is not an all-inclusive cure-all program; however it has proven to be effective by the majority of the 150,000 participants who have attended and utilized the skills taught throughout the program nationwide.

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel far more classes than have been taught due to small or no enrollment. I was recently reminded that we can lead a horse to water, however we can not make it drink. This gentleman, much older and wiser than myself, told me that this is not always true – “that’s why we have salt blocks.” I am hopeful that Boulder City’s “salt block” is not another tragedy like we have experienced in the past. Information on this program can be obtained through either the Police Department or the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Until next month, stay safe.
