Mini-Libraries
In last year’s grant cycle, Boulder City Library received approval for a federal Library Services and Technology Act grant of $25,000, administered by the Nevada State Library and Archives, to purchase large print and audiobook materials for the Southern Nevada Veteran’s Home and the Boulder City Senior Center. Each location was to receive approximately 150 new CD audiobooks, 50 new cassette audiobooks, 100 new large-print books, and 200 large-print books from Boulder City Library’s collection.

The Veteran’s Home component of this project was inaugurated in August of last year and, I understand, the residents of the Veteran’s Home are thoroughly enjoying the library materials placed there.

The Senior Center portion of the project has slipped a bit, in concert with the Senior Center’s rehab project with the old library building on Arizona Street. With the new Senior Center recently opening for business, library staff transported and assembled 10 sections of brand new library shelving at the Senior Center’s new location at 813 Arizona Street. The Senior Center’s library materials were sent up to their new home on Friday, June 16.

The mini-library at the new Senior Center will be managed by Senior Center volunteer Bruce Smith and should be open for business to Senior Center members by the time this issue of Boulder City Magazine is distributed. Items in the Senior Center mini-library will be checked out with a signature sign-up sheet, in much the same way as the Boulder City Library circulates magazines and other uncataloged materials.

In addition to the large-print and audiobook materials, the Senior Center mini-library will continue to offer paperbacks to Senior Center members, as was done at the old location.

I’m sure this will be a lot of fun and a worthwhile new service to Boulder City’s senior citizens. Please call the Boulder City Senior Center at 293-3320 for mini-library hours of operation.
