Recreation Benefits
The Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department offers programming beginning with toddler classes in gymnastics and swimming all the way through senior exercise classes and everything in between. You’re never too young or too old to find activities that will provide you with an array of benefits.

Feedback from local teachers indicates that children who participate in recreational opportunities are often better adjusted socially than those who are not socialized before entering Kindergarten. The skills identified are simple, such as taking your turn by raising your hand, standing in line, inside voices and things of this nature. These are the types of skills that children learn in the Tiny Tot program beginning at age 3. As children participate in team sports, they learn good sportsmanship and concepts of working within a team environment along with the many physical benefits such as increased stamina and better coordination. Schools hold yearly physical assessments as part of their physical education classes. Children are evaluated on a variety of things such as sit-ups, running, etc. Young people who have participated in extra curricular sports activities have a physical edge over those who have not.

When we look to the Boulder City Art Center the benefits realized there are in a different realm. Although some benefits are physical with fine tuned motor skills for painting and knitting, many of the benefits are of a mental and creative nature. Children who want to have more opportunity to explore art can participate in an art program conveniently held at Martha P. King with teacher Mignon Slentz. Those students with a focused interest in art who would like to develop a portfolio can take Fine Art Prep classes from Art Center Coordinator and Instructor Robin Kariam. With this concentrated effort, some of our young Boulder City artists are being accepted at Las Vegas magnet schools. If you haven’t been to the Art Center, a great time to experience its magic is to partake in the Nov. 5th & 6th Raku Pottery Firing. This is a hands-on demonstration of outdoor pottery firing and gives you the opportunity to glaze a piece of pottery yourself.
